My Project No.2

March 3rd, 2009

Hello, here is my first Multi-family house. The north side of lot is hedged by street and the other sides are hedged with other lots with multi-residential buildings. The slope of this lot is relatively high (over the entire length of the lot the conformation changes about 12-meters).

The main idea of this building is to create multi-residential building, which would remind people living there the lifestyle of a cottage or private home life. This project attempts to bring together families in the communities, by giving big number of area to carry out joint activities (meetings, parties). It is tried to give the opportunity for every family to enjoy the best view to green zones and inner courtyard. All apartments are designed to get as much sun as possible. Galleries to get to apartments are designed in not-sunny areas. To create cosiness for the building inner-yard was designed.

Building facade is dominated by natural materials: wood, brick, concrete. These materials are developed for facades according to the functions of internal spaces and concidering the environment. From the outside the building, material for facades is concrete, so in order to emphasize the individuality of living in the house. Gaps between windows are wooden so to inform that behind theese walls are common use premises. Fronts, in the inner courtyard, is decorated with clay bricks, thereby trying to create the greatest comfort building. Third is the high roof garden of lawns, thus increasing the quantity of the grass plot.

For a large slope in the plot side of the street, car parking is designed for virtually all of the land, thus trying to hide the transport as much as possible, and to increase the amount of green areas of the site. The entrance to the building lies in the short tunnel, which underlines for incomers the fact that they falls into another area. When we enter the building, we meet a large spacious hall, through the floor. It is designed for stairs and elevators, which gives access to the next floor. Primarily come from the Hall to the gallery, then and in each apartment.

Project description

The objective of this course work is to design an individual house, which size is 200 sq.m in the given lot. The Northern side of the lot is hedged by street and the rest sides of a lot are hedged by other lots with individual houses. The house is abutted to the Northern line.

The architectural expression of house was inspired by forms of nature. From ancient times people used trees for protection and care. To hide from the sun or rain, just come and sit peacefully for awhile and get inspiration to move on. Consequently I chose the form intimate for human being and close to forms that can be found in nature.

Frame

The house is oriented by cardinal points. Southern, West-Southern sides are the most opened and lightest and separate inter and outer areas. The northern side of the house is nearly dead wall because it has to protect the house from northern winds and the eyes of passerby. Over the edge of the lot the low-level concrete ‘flowerpot’ is situated. There the bushes will grow, in order to save the heart of home. Furthermore in the Northern side the ‘trunk’ of the tree rises and holds all the beams – ‘branches’. Under those branches two capacities are being designed. They are separated one from another by a pathway, which joins the street and the forecourt. The living rooms are designed in the first capacity and garage and boiler-room – in the other. Sitting-room, dining-room ant the kitchen are combined in one big area reaching Northern and Southern sides of the house. The bedrooms and study room are situated in the Eastern side of the house. Near the house the decorative pond, which can be seen from the dining-room’s windows, is designed. It is intended to cover the rest of the garden with various flora.

Why I use twitter?

February 10th, 2009

Today Twitter is the most popular microblogging platform on the whole net. Every second lots of posts is being written by many people there. They just keep sharing information, chatting, writing what are they doing at the moment, but what’s the point of that? Why people keep on twitting? Have they ever asked themselves: “Why I use Twitter?”…

Today I asked myself this question and you know I answered it. I found some arguments and reasons why I’m using Twitter:

  • Communication - Twitter is a very good service to communicate with other bloggers and just fine people. It’s impossible to have all of them on one program, like skype, because all of them prefers different programs. Install all the programs? That would be pretty dumb and would slower my PC’s perfomance. So why I would ever need that? While I’m and other bloggers are on Twitter there is no need to panic about the way we should communicate.
  •

  • Information - On Twitter you can find so many information posted by other that can’t even imagine. Every day I read hundred of tweets and most of them are links to a very informative or just funny posts, pictures and websites. I get like 100x times more news from Twitter than from a local news on TV in the evening. Tweet and you’ll get news from all over the world after few minutes of it happens.
  •

  • Fun - Tweeting makes me really happy and makes lots of fun. I don’t really know why, but it does.
  •

  • Good material for blog posts - When reading Tweets written by the others I catch many ideas for the new blog posts. If you don’t have anything on your mind to write about, just go to Twitter, read some new Tweets and I’m sure you will find some great ideas for a blog post.

If you still don’t use Twitter, I highly recommend you to join it. There you will find not just a great community, but many professional bloggers too, like John Chow or Darren Rowse, who can help you with blogging or just talk a bit.

Online spell and grammar checker - a must-have tool

February 9th, 2009

Writing blog in english is not so hard for a people from USA or UK. Their first language is English and they use it everyday. However there are many people who wants to write their thoughts, but they can’t because of a bad english knowledge and many mistakes. I and other two Beta4ever creators don’t know english very well too. When we are writing we do some spelling and grammar mistakes, but we try not to leave them. Online spellchecker was a very good resort for us.

Before opening this blog I’ve been searching for a good spellcheckers. It wasn’t a good idea, because I didn’t have what to check. When I wrote my first blog post I just checked it on the only one checker and it seems that it does it’s job very well.

Spellchecker.net - The tool I’m using to check my posts for an mistakes. It has a spell ,grammar checker and thing called Thesaurus. The spell and grammar checkers works almost perfectly. Thesaurus checks all the words on your posts and recommends to change some words into something else. That can really help to make a better style of your article, but sometimes it suggests something stupid.

You can find much more online tools to check your article’s mistakes, but most of them can’t even find basic errors. Who would ever need a tool who doesn’t do anything? Anyway here is the list of tools who checks only spelling or grammar too, but wasn’t too good:

Start a blog with others help

February 5th, 2009

Every day many blogs are opened. The creators of those blogs writes many blog posts every day, but  most of them stops blogging after a few weeks or days, because they don’t know what and how to do things. Sometimes they quit blogging so fast, because they don’t have any visitors at their early times. There are much more reasons for this problem, but luckily there are persons who opens a blog to help other people to start and develop a blog successfully.

You know, I had this problem too. Few years ago I started my own personal blog in english. I was writing to it 2-3 times a week and I quit writing after a month of blogging. The main reasons was simple - I didn’t knew anything about blogging. I didn’t know how to start, how my blog should look like, how to write and what to write. Also my english knowledge was so poor that everybody could hardly understand what I’m writing and that was a very big headache for me.

After I’ve left my blog alone I started to read blogs. First blogs I’ve read was written in Lithuanian by people from this country. They were writing about common problems in our country, but nothing about starting or monetizing your own blog. Acctually there would be no point of doing that, because there is no way earning money from Lithuanian blog. Anyway later I started to read blogs in english, which helped me to understand what is blogging and how things must be done to get a great success. So here are the blogs which helped me and in my opinion can help you too:

  • Johnchow.com - The first blog I’ve been reading about making money online from a blog. This blog is ran by a fine person John Chow. He is writing in his style about everything: Internet, himself, his family, money online etc. Actually this blog inspired me to start writing a blog again. Why? Because I thought that people who are not from USA or Canada can’t get success on the blogging. John Chow is not from Canada too. He just lives there.
  •

  • Problogger.net - One of the most helpful blog I have ever red. This blog’s author, Darren Rowse, is writing more than one blog for more than 7 years so he knows many things about blogs and blogging. “This website is dedicated to helping other bloggers learn the skills of blogging, share their own experiences and promote the blogging medium. ” - This is the reason why Darren Rowse started a problogger.net and I can say that this blog really helps.
  •

  • Zacjohnson.com - I don’t read this blog very often, but few articles I’ve read on his blog opened my eyes like problogger.net or johnchow.com . Zac Johnson writes many articles about making money online including monetizing your blog. One of the most inspiring article on his blog is “How I Made $860,538.38 PROFIT in 4Months!“. Isn’t that lovely?

There are much more blogs specialising on this topic, but these was the most helpful for me. I strongly recommend to read these blogs and who knows maybe you will open your own blog too?

The things I hate about Hewlett Packard notebooks

February 4th, 2009

All things began few years ago when I bought HP Pavilion dv6000. It was freshly released and had that fancy look. It has not bad complectation and the price was reachable. So I bought the first big thing in my adult life and I was very happy about it.

hp_logo-150x150 The things I hate about Hewlett Packard notebooksFirst thing I’ve noticed right away was overheating (I could warm up my hands by holding them on notebook). So I called the support and they said that normal temperature for this model was ~40 degrees. I thought OK - they know better than me.

Second issue came to me unexpectedly when the warranty was nearly over (few days left). Notebook started make noises on startup (1 long 2 short beeps) and I could only see the black window. So I took it for support and few weeks later I hear the great news - your notebook is ready, we’ve changed your motherboard. I’m like WHAT? o_O During those weeks i browsed for that beep thing, and found out that this was not coincidence or faith or whatever - lots of HP pavilion notebooks had motherboard issues after first year of having it. Lucky me that I’ve managed to change it while it was still on warranty. Of course they’ve plugged in different motherboard, but it’s working fine so no big deal.

So i thought this was it - I will happily live with my notebook ever after. But week ago - about 1,5 year after first motherboard crash - my notebook started to act very strange. It worked perfectly until then, I decided to restart and after that it didn’t start up again. The lights were on I could get to BIOS, but not further. So I used brutal force to shut down it and then the same thing happened. After few hours of rebooting I managed to get to operating system. It worked perfectly until I went to sleep and had to turn off my notebook. And that was the last day for him, because it got worse - it started to reboot constantly and I got no view. So I took it to the support again and they said it’s the motherboard AGAhp-dv6000-300x273 The things I hate about Hewlett Packard notebooksIN. Cmon..so what should I do? Buy third motherboard? Remember the warranty is over I should pay for it by myself. And if I add same amount of money I could buy new notebook. So I’m in a dilemma right now: if I change my motherboard again - how am I sure that after another year it won’t crash too? Maybe I should buy a new notebook, but after this kind of experience I’m a bit scared of that and it will cost me some extra money too.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that I will never ever buy another HP notebook again. No matter if it would be on top of the ratings.

I know that HP extended warranty on motherboards from 1 to 2 years, that’s encouraging. Years ago Hewlett Packard was on top, it created great notebooks. In our family first notebook was HP it had 4GB of memory, 64MB of RAM and it still works! We didn’t change anything and nothing broke in those years. But things change and today I can definetly say that I’ve my believe in HP as a great brand.

I found MMORPG too addictive

February 3rd, 2009

Do you know that kind of games where you are going to gain some experience by killing freaky beasts or other players. As you probably know they are called RPG games or MMORPG when you play online. That kind of games sometimes are pretty awesome, but sometimes they can just ruin your life.

You may have heard the word called “No-life” or “No-lifer”. No-lifer is a man who spends most of his time for computer and prefers communication through chats, forums, etc. than a real communication. This word is also often associated with the MMORPG games. Why? Because MMORPG games are too addictive. When you start playing it may seem too boring to play, because you are low level, nobody likes you and you can’t kill any strong monsters. But later on when you get stronger and stronger, the addiction starts.

I, like many teenagers started to play MMORPG, because that was cool(it’s ridiculous). The game was called Dofus(French game) As I said before it was pretty boring when I started, but later on my level became pretty good and my life began to roll down. I spent all my time on playing that game. When I found some In-game friends my addiction became much stronger. That’s the biggest problem of MMORPG games, because if you find some in-game friends you don’t want to leave them so you start to play more and more. Dofus really ruined my life and I lost so much time that I can’t think of.

Now I don’t play MMORPG games for a few months and feel very good. How I stopped playing? I don’t really know. Maybe it just started to be boring for me and I found other more interesting activities than playing. And you know when I left that game one of my in-game friends stopped playing too.

So I think I won’t start playing these addictive games again and for people who have never tried playing MMORPG I can only suggest not to start, because you can lose many beautiful days from your short life.

Train’s modeling

February 1st, 2009

Recently I began interest in trains modeling. Everything started when I was in  store of the models and saw several sets of trains, known as start-set. The same day I got a bonus at work. So the evening, after work, all in agreement with my girlfriend, go to the store and bought his first train model. In addition I bought one of the wagon and rail sets, considering that the beginning of the track will be too low.

My start-set is a company PIKO HO scale (number 96948). It consists of loco and three wagons. My locomotive Siemens BR20 Hercules.

In real:

hercules01 Trains modeling

And my model:

my-train1 Trains modeling

I am designing the second tracks model already. The first track model was on wooden base, which was about 10 cm above the floor, but quickly realized that this is not good thing, because the dust gathered on track very quickly, which is very damaging to locomotives. So I decided to make a track model on a table. Later on I will write about my designing progress and put some pictures of my model.

So we are starting!

February 1st, 2009

After a long time of silence these three young perspective people decided to create their own space of expression. Our names are Skirmante Ulbikaite, Gediminas Ulbikas, Gytis Jurgelevicius from Vilnius, Lithuania. Few things about us:

Skirmante Ulbikaite:

Hey, so I am student of Bioinformatics in Vilnius University. I’m working as web developer and computer technician in scientist office. Computer covers most of my leisure time, but beside this i love sewing clothes and experiment in the kitchen.

Gediminas Ulbikas:

Howdy, I’m a student of Vilnius Žirmunai gymnasium. In the school I’m mostly interested in Maths and Physics, but actually my interests are much more than Maths or physics. Web development is my favorite hobby. The fact that I started my first website when I was six proves that. Besides computers I love to ride my bike and repair my sister’s really old car. That’s really awesome activity, you better try that.

Gytis Jurgelevicius:

Hey, I’m also a student, but of Architectural Engineering in Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. I was working in Architecture Studies for last few years. At this moment I don’t have a job and now I intensively searching for new one and new professional fields too. My hobby at this moment is train’s modeling.

Each of us have always something to write about, so in this blog we’re going to discuss our lifetime issues and how to solve them and we hope that’ll help you too.
